The Wonderment of Dance

Animals exceed us in many ways, but one thing that is unique to humans is our ability to synchronise our movements and emotions with music.

Dance is an energy transaction between us, thrown into rhythmical, often synchronous movements. It’s an articulation of  the feeling and memory music conjures. Some would even say it’s God’s gift to us: a way to express the soul, individually and collectively.

Few, if any species beyond humans, are able to feel music exactly the way we do. Imagine the spectacle if they could dance like us! Envision the synthesis of human cognitive abilities—coordination, imagination and expression of emotion—with the natural strength, agility and innocent charm of animals. Such a performance could only captivate and inspire.

In this series of drawings and brushwork on paper, Chrissie Kar Wah explores what it would look like to reimagine dance as intrinsic to the animal biology. ‘The Wonderment of Dance’ combines Kar Wah’s passion and practice in dance to her care and curiosity of the natural world. For many years the artist has delved into various forms of dance, and since childhood, has taken in and cared for the animals around her. These pieces, as a result, are infused with fantastical imagery that seem plucked from the realm of dreams, inspiring imagination and awe.
